Smoke Detectors are now required, retroactively, in the following locations:
- In Each Bedroom
- In the common hallway outside the bedroom area (bedrooms remote from each other will require detectors in each common hallway adjacent to the bedrooms)
- In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements and cellars but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics
Note: These detectors may be battery operated. However, if a renovation takes place the detectors must be hard wired and interconnected.
Electrical Outlets are now required, retroactively, in the following locations:
- In each bathroom that does not currently have an electrical outlet, a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter type outlet must be installed.
- Should an electrical outlet currently be installed in a bathroom or kitchen, it must be converted to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter type outlet .
- In each bedroom a minimum of two (2) electrical outlets must be installed. If there is currently a single electrical outlet in a bedroom an additional electrical outlet must be installed.
Note: All electrical wiring and equipment must conform to the National Electrical Code.
The above requirements, as previously indicated, are retroactive as per the New York State Property Maintenance Code.
